Left us on this day (Jan. 5) in 2010: US soul, R&B, rocknroll, pop & funk trumpeter, bandleader, producer, arranger & label boss Willie Mitchell (heart attack, age 81), best remembered for helping to develop the Memphis soul sound of the ’60s & beyond; he was best known for his Hi Records label of the 70s, which released albums by a large stable of popular Memphis soul artists, including Willie himself, Al Green, Syl Johnson & Ann Peebles; he issued a number of popular singles as an artist in the 60s, including the 1968 UK #43 Soul Serenade; he ran Royal Studios in Memphis, that (in addition to the above) featured notable productions for the likes of Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Keith Richards, Ike & Tina Turner, Tom Jones & Rod Stewart; Willies last production was the final Solomon Burke studio album, Nothings Impossibile, released in 2010…
