Left us on this day (May 29) in 1997: American singer-songwriter & guitarist Jeff Buckley (accidental drowning, age 30), noted for his grand vocals, quasi-operatic in sweep; he followed in the career footsteps of his father Tim Buckley (also a cult fave singer-songwriter who died tragically at a young age in 1975); after a decade working as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, Jeffs 1994 debut album Grace went gold, thanks in part to help from famous fans - Jimmy Page called it his favorite album of the 90s & David Bowie claimed it as one of his 10 Desert Island Discs; the LP contained his cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, which Rolling Stone ranked #259 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time; since Jeffs passing, there have been many posthumous releases of his material, most notably a collection of four-track demos & studio recordings for his unfinished second album My Sweetheart the Drunk; many artists he knew or influenced have penned tribute songs, including PJ Harvey & Rufus Wainwright; the 2012 film Greetings from Tim Buckley explores the relationship Jeff had with his father…
