Left us on this day (Nov. 13) in 2002: Michael Stewart (suicide, age 57), best remembered as the co-founder, bandleader, guitarist & banjoist of San Francisco 60s folk-rock group We Five; the band took the Sylvia Tyson composition You Were On My Mind to US #3 in 1965; their version of Lets Get Together reached US #31 in 1967; Michael became a successful record producer, one of his most prominent sessions being Billy Joels 1973 US #23 second studio album, Piano Man; he appeared in occasional reunions with We Five from 1978-89, then left the music industry in the early-90s to become a computer programmer (he was a pioneering developer of MIDI music software); he later played bass in his sons Jaimies band, The Indestructible Beat, of Palo Alto, California (Jaimie was also the frontman of popular avant-garde group Xiu Xiu); Michael was also the brother of successful singer-songwriter John Stewart…
