Left us on this day (Oct. 3) in 2002: Darryl DeLoach (liver cancer, age 55), best remembered as the original lead singer, lyricist & tamborine player for San Diego heavy psych-rock band, Iron Butterfly, arguably the very first heavy metal group; in the beginning, it was Darryls parents garage that served as the site for their almost nightly rehearsals; their 1968 debut album Heavy contained several songs written by Darryl (including this clip), who then left the band shortly after its release; their following album (without him) contained their biggest hit, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida; Darryl later fronted the such unsuccessful bands as Two Guitars, Piano, Drum & Darryl, as well as Flintwhistle, before fading from the music sceneā€¦
