Left us on this day (Sept. 20) in 2011: celebrated British photographer Robert Whitaker (following a long illness age 71), whose shots of The Beatles, taken between 1964-66, are some of the most iconic images in pop music history; he devised & captured the groups infamous butcher cover for the album Yesterday & Today, as well as the photos used for the cover collage of Revolver; his photos of power trio Cream (Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker) were used in the cover collage of their classic 1967 album Disraeli Gears; he also photographed the likes of Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer, Cilla Black, Mick Jagger (taken during the production of the film Ned Kelly) & The Seekers (in 2002, his photographs of the band were chosen for a special commemorative Australia Post stamp); Robert continued to work in photography through the rest of his life, at times as a photojournalist for TIME & Life magazines…
