Left us on this day (Sept. 25) in 2012: crooner Andy Williams (bladder cancer, age 84); through the popularity of his three-time Emmy winning The Andy Williams Show (1962-71) & his mellifluous tenor voice, he was one of the best-loved figures in American pop culture; his career spanned eight decades with more than 100 million albums sold (including 18 gold & three platinum); his hits included Butterfly, Born Free, Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You, Love Story, Can’t Get Used To Losing You & his signature song Moon River (which gave name to the theatre he owned in Branson, Missouri), plus some 20 other US Top 40 singles; he continued to perform live into his 80s; although he was considered a square by the counterculture crowd, Andy was one of the few major stars to speak out against the Nixon Administration’s attempts to deport John Lennon in the early-’70s…
