Left us on this day (Sept. 3) in 1970: Alan Blind Owl Wilson (accidental sleeping pill overdose, age 27), best remembered as the co-founder, co-vocalist, guitar/harmonica player & primary composer of US 60s/70s blues-psych-rock band, Canned Heat; they came to prominence performing at two landmark concerts of the 60s - the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 & Woodstock in 1969 (also the UK Isle of Wight Festival in 1970); the band appeared in the Woodstock film, with their 1968 US #11 & UK #19 Going Up the Country (which Alan sang) positioned as the festivals unofficial theme song; he also wrote the groups second greatest hit, On the Road Again (1968 UK #8 & US #16); influenced by early Delta bluesman Skip James, Alan perfected a high-tenor singing voice that became his trademark; he was also a passionate conservationist, who worked outside of music to preserve natural habitats…
