“Leftovers Again” Mat 14:15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. 18 He said, Bring them hither to me. 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. In many households today, there will those that say, “Leftovers again!” We just had this meal yesterday! In the family I was raised in, we longed for ‘leftovers’. Our mother was the greatest cook and we enjoyed the meals that she would prepare for us. Her specialty was mashed potatoes and gravy with many a meal for our family of seven boys and five girls. As you can see no leftovers! We had human garbage disposals. It was not unusual for the guys to ask girls if they were through and would take what they had not eaten and finish it off. Jesus told the disciples that the fragments that remained would need to be taken up and there were 12 baskets full of “leftovers”. The Son of God never wasted anything. His words were not to be taken lightly. When He prayed for this meal before 5,000 people or more, these that sat by groups of 50 were fed to the full. The lad that provided the 5 loaves and 2 fish could not be happier than to have leftovers. We that have been blessed to have different meals throughout a day would laugh at someone when they said, “We had leftovers again!” When it comes to God’s infallible Word, we go to church and expect that we will have, guess what – ‘warm over, leftovers!” But when our Bibles are taken away from us and there is no church meeting because of socialism, we would long for the days of warmed over sermons or ‘Leftovers.” So be thankful with what is set before you at the evening meal to eat even if it is, “leftovers.” The fragments were a lesson to us that we not take things for granted especially the miracle that was done by our Savior. Thank you Lord, for the teaching you give us on, “leftovers again.” Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, a light to my path.
