Legacy Builder Spotlight: Kim It’s True - we all learn from our previous experiences! I was a young mom trying to find a way to contribute to the family finances while still being “present” in their lives. The first thing that came to mind was cleaning houses and throughout the years I had a handful of clients. A little extra money every once in awhile was nice, but I wanted more. That is when I saw Direct Sales and Mary Kay Cosmetics in particular. I liked the idea of being in business for myself – I knew I was a hard worker and I was confident I could succeed. Well, on the surface it probably looked like I was succeeding; I had a team of consultants, I was always top in sales and I had even reached the level of winning a car. I learned a lot about myself and about business during my time with MKC. What I found was that I WAS a hard worker! I would work vigorously one month – and have a pretty good month, then when the first day of the next month came around, I started at zero again. The bigger I got, the harder it was to keep up that transactional business and what I saw was, “when I stopped – it stopped.” When I finally paused to evaluate my experience, I had to be honest with myself…I really hadn’t made a significant impact financially for my family. The expenses of the sales aids, samples, and hostess gifts had virtually wiped out my profits. Where was the financial benefit to my family – tied up in the thousands of dollars in inventory! I vowed never again to look at a direct sales company or party plan business. Fast forward to 2010, I was a year into being a breast cancer survivor, my husband had lost the cushy job we thought would provide that “golden parachute” for our retirement, and my part-time real estate job was almost non-existent because of the economy. Not a fun place to be. One day my 24-year old, school teacher daughter wanted to show me her new business that was going to help her out financially. All I could think was, “Oh no, here we go again!” I truly did not want her to go down the same path I had, so I told her not to do it - “You don’t have any time or any money to get started in one of those things AND you will certainly never make any significant money.” All she said was, “I think this is different, will you take a look?” So, reluctantly, I did. What I saw was completely different than what I thought. I saw a solid company with a different kind of business model. A business with virtually no investment, no sales, no inventory, no risk and true, reliable, residual income! Right then, I decided she was not going to do this alone, I was going to jump in too! This year she will make close to 3 times her teaching salary and I’m not far behind! So, I guess you can learn from your past experiences and I knew right away this was going to be different. Take the time to learn why we are different. It may be one of the best decisions you ever make.
