Legalistic- Excessive adherence to law or formula (New Oxford American Dictionary). The Scribes and the Pharisees during the days when Jesus walked upon this earth were legalistic. Instead of searching for or living out true righteousness, they heaped law upon law until it seemed almost impossible for the people to walk pleasing to God. These leaders, who should have been leading people the right way into the presence of God, instead erected barriers to God. They focused upon the exterior works of their flesh instead of a clean, faithful and right heart. They created ordinance after ordinance ever complicating and obscuring the light. What did Jesus say about this nonsense? But WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in (Matthew 23:13). He even went further and called them ...a son of hell as yourselves (v. 15). In verse 14, He said Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. Heed this warning and never allow your pride to cause you to erect man-made opinions as barriers to people seeking to enter the kingdom of heaven. Instead, stick to the Word, and if God is silent on an issue, then you should also be silent. Seek the truth in the Word for yourself and ask God to give you an understanding of the vastness of His mercy, love, and grace. He, as the Creator, can create new hearts within man. Let Him begin within you.
