Legislator Kate Browning 1 min · Suffolk County Septic Lottery Applications Now Available County to Select 19 Homeowners to Receive Free Advanced Wastewater Treatment System; November 14 Submission Deadline I want to notify homeowners in the third district of an opportunity to receive a free advanced wastewater treatment system that greatly reduces nitrogen contamination. The County will be conducting a lottery to select 19 homeowners to receive the free system, including free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The pilot program is part of Suffolk County’s plan to improve the County’s water quality and eradicate nitrogen pollution by means of sewering targeted areas and implementing advanced on-site wastewater treatment systems. This is a unique opportunity for homes in vulnerable areas to install expensive waste water treatment systems at no cost for five years. In my legislative district I have focused heavily on bringing sewers to our waterfront communities, especially near the Forge River because of the negative impacts caused by antiquated cesspools and septic systems. However, while the creation of a sewer district remains a priority, this program can help advance alternative systems that may benefit areas not suitable for large sewer districts or where a homeowner may be due to upgrade an older system. We need to aggressively pursue all options to address our water quality crisis. To fill out an application residents are encouraged to log onto: suffolkcountyny.gov/…/SepticDemonstrationProgram.aspx Applications are due November 14, 2014. After a thorough screening process, a random drawing will be conducted to select the 19 qualified homeowners. In addition to covering maintenance for five years, the septic system suppliers are also including a five-year warranty for both parts and labor. After the five years, the selected homeowners will have to pay for an annual maintenance contract, the average annual cost of which may vary by supplier, but is estimated to be around $200-$400, based on data from other jurisdictions with developed market for advanced treatment systems. Also, there will be the cost of electricity to run the systems, in the area of $5 to $20 per month.
