Leichhardt - Lost Again - Only THIS time it is a CSG Company not a Bewildered German Explorer Once again here is another wonderful story about a community who prevailed against big business and bought out government by forcing the cancellation of not one, but three Petroleum Exploration Licences (PELs) held by Leichhardt Resources in their region. The Greens NSW mining spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham applauded their success and asked that the NSW government also cancel other PELs including the licences covering the Sydney Metropolitan area and water catchments. “What a fantastic win for the farmers and community who have worked so hard to protect their land, water and future,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham who added that he has visited the three communities in the Moree, Bylong and Southern Highland districts many times. “To put at risk such productive agricultural land by granting and then renewing gas exploration licences to a $2 company, was extremely bad policy and the Minister has done the right thing by ordering the cancellation.” He said. National coordinator for Lock the Gate Phil Laird is also thrilled adding that this decision by Anthony Roberts was a landmark ruling and the first real test of the Office of Coal Seam Gas and its regulation of the industry. “Importantly this sets a legal precedent and shows what the community has to do to get a PEL cancelled,” Mr Laird said “Basically – if a company fails to do what is legally required they should lose their PEL.” The three licences were cancelled apparently, because the company failed to consult with traditional owners and the community, and failed to meet their work program, a breach of their licence conditions. jeremybuckingham.org/2014/10/14/cancellation-of-csg-licences-a-big-win-for-farmers-and-community/
