Lena Calhoun Horne, singer, dancer, civil rights activist, born in Brooklyn June 30, 1917, died in NYC May 2010, after a career starting as a Cotton Club dancer in 1933, when she was just 16, through appearances featured in Hollywood musicals like Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. She spent the last several years of her life singing and entertaining around the world. MGM made her use make-up to darken her skin, so if she had an African American love interest, she would not appear "white." She was raised partly by her grandmother Calhoun, who was a descendant of Southern politician and slavery advocate John C. Calhoun.
