Lenten Devotional: Tuesday, March 11th Read in the Book: pp. 9-19 (The Prodigal God) Scripture: 1 Samuel 3: 1-10 Observation A young boy named Samuel, hears someone calling his name in the night. He assumes that it is the host, Eli, of the home he is staying in. Samuel responds three times to Eli before Eli figures out that it is the Lord calling for Samuel. Now Samuel did not understand this because “. . .he did not yet know the Lord, nor was the word revealed to him.” So, Eli instructed Samuel about the Lord and how to answer HIS calls. Of course, the Lord called Samuel a fourth time (sidebar: The Lord never gives up on us!!!) and Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” Wow! Two great character lessons here—when are you Eli? When are you Samuel? Can we learn something from each them? Application Building a relationship with Christ can not be done unless we KNOW CHRIST. Eli very simply told Samuel, “Hey let me tell you about Christ. . .cool dude. . .pay attention to him and answer him and awesome things can happen!” If someone hadn’t taken this charge in Samuel’s life, Samuel would still be answering the wrong call. When are you Eli? Whom have you encouraged to know Christ? Whom have you shown the involvement of Christ in your ife by your actions? Whom have you invited to church? Whom have you invited to study time? Now, let’s look at it as if we were Samuel. . . ahhhhh, the spirit of a child. . . so accepting. . .”Oh, the Lord is calling me? Okee dokee!!” When are you Samuel? When the Lord asks something of you, do you respond with, “I’ve got this Lord! Roger that! I’m there! I’ve got your back! Let’s do this, God!!!” Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to be both an Eli and a Samuel. Help me to lead people to You. Help me to say “Yes!” to your will! In Jesus Name, Amen
