Leo Tolstoy was famous, influential, and well off when he wrote this. The question–that which at the age of fifty brought me to the edge of the abyss–was the simplest of questions… “What will come of what I am doing today or shall do tomorrow? What will come of my whole life?” Differently expressed, the question is: “Why should I live, why wish for anything, or do anything?” It can also be expressed thus: “Is there any meaning in my life that the inevitable death awaiting me does not destroy?” My deeds whatever they may be will be forgotten sooner or later, and I myself will be no more, why then do anything? I therefore could not attach a rational meaning to a single act of my entire life. The only thing that amazed me was how I had failed to realize this from the very beginning. How could anyone fail to see this? That’s what is amazing. This fall we are looking at some of these foundational questions that are floating around in all our heads and hearts. The first three chapters of Genesis provide a foundation for every issue of life--Where we come from to why we are here--The Great Creator God has made the world and invited humanity to be part of His Story which continues to unfold. Tolstoy also said that as long as we are intoxicated we can manage just fine in this life--it is when we sober up that we begin to have issues. One of the hopes and promises of Christianity is you dont have to be afraid of being sober and facing these questions. You are invited to join us--We want to offer you a place where you are free to struggle with the truth claims of Christianity- where you are free to ask honest questions and get honest answers. Hope you will join us. Grace & Peace gathers at 10:30 Sunday Mornings and for now we are still meeting at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center.
