Leonardo DiCaprio has lent his voice to speak out on behalf of elephants. The actor/activist who founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation recently joined with Jane Goodall, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and others to voice their concern about the ivory trade. “In the past century, the number of elephants in the wild has declined by 50 percent,” DiCaprio explains. “Their disappearance could devastate ecosystems and have a lasting impact on the biodiversity of our planet.” Dr. Goodall agreed: “The mass poaching of elephants in Africa should be of great global concern. I applaud the U.S. ban on ivory in its intent to counter the devastating toll on dwindling elephant populations in the wild and address the physical and emotional suffering of these intelligent and highly social animals.” Dr. Goodall, DiCaprio, and others have signed a letter to President Obama commending him on his administration’s commitment to end the devastating slaughter of elephants for their ivory and to ensure that the United States is not helping to drive the illegal wildlife trade. According to IFAW, fewer than half a million elephants remain in Africa’s savannas and jungles. Recently, the slaughter has surged. Poachers are slaughtering on average one elephant every 15 minutes, putting some populations on a path to extinction.
