Leonardo da Vinci’s observations of optics and astronomy - TopicsExpress

Leonardo da Vinci’s observations of optics and astronomy complicated his understanding of light. Though these complications forced him to reject “tidy” interpretations of light and optics, they ultimately allowed him to excel in the portrayal of reflection, shadow, and luminescence. He painted his three know female portraits by candlelight, light of extremely low frequency, which may have affected his perception of the figure as multi-stable, rather than modern perceptions of the vanishing smile and instability of the figure at high light frequencies.
