Less than a third of eligible voters in Texas are Hispanic, and their electoral impact is not expected to manifest itself in the current election cycle, said Jim Henson, a Texas Tribune pollster and director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin. This gives the Republican candidates room to move farther to the right in an effort to tap into the Tea Party electorate, voters who are more conservative on immigration than traditional Republicans and are driving the discussion within the party, Henson said. Party strategists are “worried about the long-term prospects of the Republican Party if the immigration rhetoric remains as pitched as it is,” Henson said. “But you’re not seeing that translate into candidates’ positions very much.”
