Lesson No. 1 for seniors applying to college. Where should you - TopicsExpress

Lesson No. 1 for seniors applying to college. Where should you apply? The important thing is to consider fit. Location, choice of majors, style, cost, all of it. This even includes top brand schools. For example, if you were interested in studying engineering, UChicago and the Ivy League (except Cornell) would be a good fit for you. Yale, for example, didnt create their engineering school until 2012, UChicago only offers one major, etc. You would be a better fit at a state school, MIT, Stanford, etc. Intersted in the classics? UT Austin and Indiana have good classics programs. Interested in pre-med? University of Washington. For those of you considering graduate school for a masters or doctorate degree, a liberal arts school may prepare you the best rather than a more impersonal style at large universities. Another thing is size. The bigger the school, the more variety you will get. But while a smaller school may be more tight knit, they tend to be more homogeneous. UChicago is known for their quirky types; if that sort of humor fits you, then it would be a good fit. Consider location. Califiornia has some of the best weather in the world, but is it worth driving across the country for it? Do you want to be in a rural area like Dartmouth - leaving it largely campus-focused (which includes heavy partying), or do you want to be in an urban area to eat at every night. Just some things to consider. Next week.... advice for your college essay
