Lesson Not Learned And she said, The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured. 1 Samuel 4:22 Before we enter 1 Samuel 5, we have to look at how Chapter 4 ended. Eli died, his sons died and the glory of the Lord had departed; it was a done deal. The Ark of the Covenant was captured by the Philistines and God began to judge Israel. Often, when you read the Bible, you come to these stories and you do not have the background, so people get confused. If you do not have the background to the chapter, then you are going to miss a link. In studying the history of Israel and doing some research on Chapter 5, in order to understand what was going on in this chapter, we have to go to Jeremiah 7. It is very important to remember, the Bible is Gods Word and the books all come together to tell one story. While I was studying 1 Samuel 5, it took me to Jeremiah 7:29: Cut off your hair and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on the desolate heights; for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath. Even with Gods Word, the children of Israel will disobey the Lord again, and His glory will depart from them. They did not learn. We have Gods Word today. Have we learned the lessons God is teaching us? Will we obey the Lord, individually and as a nation? Think about it.
