Lessons from Ibus Kitchen November 3, 2013 at 6:55pm In August, I flew to Malaysia to take sweet respite, or maybe I should say - sweet escape. Thanks to my host family there for allowing me to stay with them for almost a month. One of the plans was to learn baking. I must say, I did! :) Ibu Bainun and my sister, Wawa, were very accomdating to me. They have allowed me to have a hands-on experience on baking cake and pastries. The next lines are the lessons I have learned while working in the kitchen. Allow me to share them with you. 1. Our lives can be likened to the actions happening in the kitchen. There are ups and downs. There were days that we failed to get the kind of taste that we want for our cakes. Patiently, we have to do the process again, this time bearing the lessons learned. 2. There are times we should measure the exact amount for if we fail to do so, we cant achieve our desired result. However, there are times when we can just sprinkle ingredients based on our instinct, whatever pleases us at the moment. That, whatever happens, wont bring anything significant effects to the result. 3. SOPs should be strictly observed. What should be turned on or off first should go first. Talking about ingredients, we cannot just mix them at our desired pace and pattern, we have to adhere to the should bes until everything is completely done and over. 4. Happy disposition brightens the baking mood. If we are happy bakers, we can more likely produce not just better-decorated cakes, but better-tasting ones as well! 5. If we have learned from our failed baking last time, there is no way we bake with the same error again. 6. Our tastes our quite relative, the level of sweetness we put into can be highly dependent on the kind of sweetness defined by our respective taste buds. 7. We can only learn baking if we have the interest and passion for it. 8. Trial and error is one of the key processes in the kitchen. If we are uncomfortable making mistakes, then baking might not be for us! 9. A beautiful cake does not just come out from the oven! It requires a lot of bakers creativity and passion for baking. 10. Everything in the kitchen, all the utensils, even how small in size, have stories of worth to tell and share :)
