Lessons from the mountain gorillas: can tourism save endangered species? By Ian Redmond, OBE Thursday January 16th, 16:15 in room G001, Whitelands College, university of Roehampton. Ian Redmond has been a major force in conservation biology for over thirty 30 years. Although he is best known for his work on primates, his knowledge of conservation biology and tropical ecology is wide-ranging and includes work on a broad range of taxa. His early work on mountain gorillas was with the late Dr Dian Fossey, in Karisoke, Rwanda. His experiences working in Karisoke led him to change his focus from research to conservation and he is now the Chief Consultant for GRASP - UNEP/ UNESCO Great Apes Survival Partnership - an organisation he helped to launch in 2001. He also acts as an advisor to the Born Free Foundation, the Gorilla Organization, Orangutan Foundation, Wildlifeline and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. He established and chairs the Ape Alliance (70 organizations linked via 4apes), the African Ele-Fund and the UK Rhino Group. Ian’s work on gorillas includes documentary film-making and he introduced Sir David Attenborough to the gorillas in 1978 for the ground breaking series ‘Life on Earth’. We are delighted to welcome him to Roehampton and hope you can join us for this seminar.
