Lessons in Proverbs - Lesson 80 - “Childrens children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” Proverbs 17:6 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel” Proverbs 1:1 Solomon said, “Childrens children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” Proverbs 17:6 Solomon is referring to grandchildren are the “crown of old men”, i.e., grandfathers and a father’s children are his glory. The LORD God of Israel made it very explicit what His chosen people would do to love Him and keep His commandments. “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.” Deuteronomy 5:10 The LORD God showed them mercy. Then Moses told them what the LORD God wanted them to do. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” The “crown of old men” and the glory a father’s children bring him, are based on Deuteronomy 5:16; 6:30-33. The Fifth Commandment, in particular, where children honor their fathers and mothers, and obey their teachings in the “Law”, would indeed be a “crown to old men” and a glory to fathers. Fathers taught their children, according to Deuteronomy 6:4-9, and when the children became fathers, they taught there children the ”Law”, according to Deuteronomy 6:4-9. When fathers no longer taught their children the “Law” of the LORD God, they went astray from the LORD God’s “Law” and eventually into captivity because of their disobedience. Jeremiah 39 There is much wisdom in Solomon’s teaching. In the New Testament, Paul, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, filled with Holy Spirit, gave the same type of encouragement to fathers as Solomon did. In Ephesians 6:1-4, Paul quoted the Fifth Commandment, and gave strong encouragement to children and fathers. “1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Paul’s instruction to children is for them to obey their parents in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Fifth Commandment is very relevant to the raising of children. Paul gave instruction to the fathers. He said to fathers, in the Lord Jesus Christ, to not provoke, i.e., “1. To make angry; to offend; to incense; to enrage.” 1611 King James Dictionary But rather bring them up in the nurture, i.e., “2. That which promotes growth; education; instruction. Ephesians 6.” 1611 King James Dictionary In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the instruction given by fathers, in the Word of God, to their children, and then when the children are raised and teach their children, “ are a crown of old men” i.e., grandfathers, and the glory of a father. In this lesson, Solomon, along with the teaching, concerning the”crown of old men” and a glory to a father, also, said you can tell the way of the wicked by their lies, and whoever mocks the poor, , the “Maker” will deal with. Let us read our text, Proverbs 17:1-3, and then comment on it in more detail. Proverbs 17:4-6 “4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue. 5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished. 6 Childrens children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” In verse 4, Solomon said, “A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.” You can tell a lot about a person by what they say and how they act. A wicked person is one who walks, according to his own ways, and contrary to the “Law” of the LORD. One of their trademarks, is a lying tongue, and a liar listens to what wicked, corrupt people say. The liar and the wicked are all devoted to their wicked ways and they agree with one another in wicked deeds. It is the same in the New Testament, Jesus said you shall know them by their fruit. “15 ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.” Matthew 7:15-17 In verse 5, Solomon said, “Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.” Whosoever mocks the poor “mocks” his Maker, i.e., The Creator and he that is glad at someone’s calamities shall be punished. “7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” Galatians 6:7-8 Jesus said, “Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.’ “ Matthew 19:21 Jesus is God with us, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:23 And as God in the flesh, He looks out for the poor. In verse 6, Solomon said, “Childrens children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” Solomon gave us insight to this verse in Proverbs 20:7, “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” The “crown of old men” and the glory of a father, starts with their walk, in integrity, i.e., in the “moral soundness or purity; incorruptness; uprightness; honesty.” 1611 King James Dictionary Children learn best when their fathers are walking in the integrity of the “Law” of the LORD. And in the New Testament, when fathers walk in the integrity of the commandments of Jesus Christ. John 14:15; 15:7-14 What have we learned from Solomon? 1. (4) “A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.” You can tell a lot about a person by what they say and how they act. And in the New Testament, when fathers walk in the integrity of the commandments of Jesus Christ. John 14:15; 15:7-14 In conclusion, Solomon gave a strong warning against a lying tongue. One of the biggest falsehoods is a lie. Where does the severity of lies lead to? In 1 Timothy 4:1-6, Paul, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, told Timothy, what to look out for and what to put Christians in remembrance of. “1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.” One of the things Paul told Timothy was to beware of those who speak “lies in hypocrisy”. Lies are a part of “seducing spirits” and “doctrines of devils” that lead Christians to depart from the faith. The departing, from the faith, started in Paul’s time, that is why he told Timothy to remind those he ministered to, to be very careful that they did not get caught up in “lies of hypocrisy”. Paul told Timothy, “f thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.” In Ephesians 4:29, Paul told the saints at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus, what should should not come out of their mouths, and to the saints and faithful in Christ Jesus , he told them what should come out of their mouths. “29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.“ Therefore, everything we say should be to the edifying, i.e., “To instruct and improve the mind in knowledge generally, and particularly in moral and religious knowledge, in faith and holiness.” 1611 King James Dictionary The instruction in “faith” and “holiness” is for the purpose of, ministering “grace unto the hearers.” Grace in this context is, “7. Spiritual instruction, improvement and edification. Eph.4.29“ 1611 King James Dictionary Therefore, let us be faithful to Jesus Christ, in our communications with one another, instructing one another, in matters of “faith” and “holiness”.
