“Let It Ring For Evermore” A lament about young love and Electric Light Orchestra’s song Telephone Line - by Bob Driver The sentiment of this tune is lost on today’s youth… Wow!!! With that statement I have finally made the total transformation from young man into a grumpy old geezer - a Big Fat Bag of Wind - Just take me out to pasture and shoot me! But I can’t seem to stop this cynical chuckle from rising up inside of me. The same chuckle that I have heard erupt from so many other old-timers when discussing youth. Yet, the simple truth is this, kids of today will never experience the powerful emotions involved with a tethered telephone. Those times are done and gone. Our generation, Gen X, is probably the last group to explore the lines of love telephonically. Technology has moved so far beyond the family phone to produce, in some cases, phones smarter than the kids face-timing on them! These poor kids will never know Mom’s all important rule of having a dime or quarter in your pocket whenever you left the house to be used in-case of emergency or the shame of not being allowed to accept a phone call during dinner time (And we won’t even discuss the embarrassment involved with every teenager’s lack of phone privacy). The concepts of rotary, wall-mounted, collect-call or dial “0” for an operator make no sense to today’s savvy iPhone users. For the most part, the elementary concept of spending time together in simple conversation seems to have vanished from this web culture. Even more so, the idea of love found and lost over the telephone line has forever faded out of view… and lost are the little things that could have come true. Since the generation of Bell, youth has used the telephone line to signal love. For most of us, it was the blind twilight of a telephone line that offered us our first lessons of love. As well as the stinging heartaches and turmoil of late night buzzy signals. It was during the anguish of those pulsing electric tones or marathons of unanswered rings that many of our young minds became consumed with love’s jilted shadows of the night. Causing some of us to question, what if it does ring for evermore? With certainty of fact, this old geezer concludes that texting and posting are poor substitutes for conversation and close communication… Data thumbed into a pocket sized screen will never truly convey the electricity of young love. Or any other type of love.
