Let me chime in... I keep reading heinous posts on the Ferguson/Michael Brown subject. Whatever your stance may be on the verdict of the case, lets just clear a few things up: OF COURSE as a white person you are not allowed to drop the N word (yes someone actually was wondering in their post why it was ok for black people to use said word when it wasnt ok for white people to use it). If you read up on a little history, I think you might begin to comprehend that making an argument such as black people use the N word, so why cant white people underlines the fact that we do not live in a post racial society. That reasoning is just as pathetic as I have black friends, Im not racist, which usually preludes a blatantly racist remark. Please do not tell people what to stand for, you have absolutely no idea what their struggle is. Your minimization of racism elucidates the reality that many people have no idea what is going on in their own country. And just to be clear: the reverse racism argument might make sense in your head when you consider things on a surface level, tit for tat, this person did something to that person, but if you were oriented to history even a little bit, youd understand that a time machine would be necessary to go back and change history to even make reverse racism plausible. I know that 1865 might seem like a long time ago, but it was only 149yrs back. Thats when conventional slavery ended. Guess how long legal slavery went on for? 245yrs. Do you think that a society who was able to justify enslaving people for 245yrs just magically gets rid of racism with the passing of time? No. People organize themselves, they speak out and stand for something. In the 1960s, only about 50 years ago, people were organizing in the civil rights movement, because parts of our country were still segregated 50 years ago! Legislation was passed that moved us towards a more equitable society, but do you think that that changed white peoples minds who couldnt comprehend sitting at the same lunch counter or drinking out of the same fountain as black people?!?! Those underlying beliefs that fail to see the humanity in people of color still run rampant in todays political debates and filter all the way up through the justice system. If you understood the way social systems function, youd understand that changing peoples belief patterns takes a long, long time. Instead of telling people to stop pulling the race card, which Im willing to venture a guess is a sound bite you directly regurgitated from Fox News, you should look at statistics. White on black police brutality has been a reality for decades. People are angry because it keeps happening that white police officers get off scott free for beating and often killing young black men. The family of Brown asked people to peacefully protest, and many didnt heed that request, but that does not render the whole cause impertinent.
