Let me introduce you to EJ (Elmer James Hagar) All around great guy. Warrior. Family man. Crazy couch to HHH 50 mile man. Pretty much a John Wayne type. Here is his HHH story: We were discussing HHH at our fight club and I was extremely hesitant to go. I am a recently converted MTB and felt vastly unprepared. EJ interjected to the conversation that he hadnt been biking in about a year and was confident that he could bang out 50 miles so I should be able to do the 100k. Needless to say, I couldnt refuse his challenge. So I was in. Turns out all the bike talk got EJ motivated to go and he signed up! Fast forward to race day. Let me set the stage. EJ hadnt ridden a bike in a while. He is pretty active with kayaking and skydiving etc but most wouldve said somewhat unprepared. You could tell he was a mixture of nervous excitement before the cannon shot off to start the race. So the race starts and all of our group got separated until about 8 miles in. In the mas a of humanity we couldnt find EJ. So we proceed on to the 20 mile mark as previously planned. We all meet up and EJ was not too far behind. He had a look of realizing the scope of the race. We encouraged him and we set of to mile 30. EJ completely dominated this segment. We rested and fueled up and went on to mile 40. You could tell EJ was in his pain cave but he kept pushing forward, passing people on bikes worth thousands and people half his age! So we get to mile 40 in again pretty decent time. We press on to mile 50. It was a little slower with a few climbs and we stopped at mile 47 for a brief rest. While at the rest, EJs bike was resting against a fence. All of a sudden we hear a huge BOOM. The tube AND tire literally exploded! We couldnt fix the tire so EJ had to SAG out, which was a bummer. Had this not happened EJ wouldve certainly gone to his planned 50 and maybe beyond. I am extremely proud of his effort and it is no understatement that he really had to push himself and give a great effort. Theres a lot of use in mountain biking of the word epic. Id use it here to describe EJ and his effort at HHH. Awesome.
