Let me put the records straight. For a start, if anyone does not - TopicsExpress

Let me put the records straight. For a start, if anyone does not understand the Chinese culture, I humbly suggest that he shut up and avoid embarrassing himself! The traditional Chinese firmly belief in karma (and belief me, some idiots will translate this to karmasutra!), which means what goes around comes around. Whenever we are blessed with something good, we reward that person and donate more to the unfortunate. We belief in mutual enrichment. But if we fail to do that, we will always worry about bad omen might befall on us. Now there are two types of Chinese, the religious type and the economic type. The religious type gives handouts without any expectation except from the divine, one day they will earn enough credit to enjoy the after or next life, or good luck showers their next generations. The economic type believes in mutual prosperity, I give you, you give me, I give you again and you give me... and the cycle goes on and on. While the economic type believes in good deeds too, they are more realistic and ensure that good deeds at least bring some immediate returns, e.g. tax rebate, publicity, etc. So far, am I obvious enough in saying that rewards are offered ONLY AFTER a good service is rendered? Just like those days when we bring home plenty of As, we will be given an angpow (otherwise we will get another type of angpow on our buttocks!). Or when someone helped us on some carpentry or odd-job free-of-charge, they will also be given a angpow. Or angpow for those garbage collectors during Chinese New Year. Those days I used to follow my late grandmother to many different orphanages or old folks home to give angpow, a good luck gesture for the unfortunates. Now, this is what I called reward or sharing. Unfortunately, people becomes greedy and they now ask for angpow before starting to do anything! And worse, their speed or scope of service depend on how much you give them! Worst, some will tell you its 70% commission, take it or leave it! And this becomes a norm and today if we fail to give a hamper during any festivity, the next time we need their service they will show us a sour face or not bothered attitude! So dont talk about rasuah when the basic good deeds are twisted by the very devil within those who take the good people for granted or even for a ride!
