Let me start by saying that all those people who usually say “if you love someone, let them know” should be shot twice in the armpits. Three months after I was done with High school, I enrolled into KCA kisumu campus for some computer lessons. As days passed by, I developed strong emotional attachment to Brenda, the lady who sat next to me during the computer classes. Other than her beauty, she once taught me how to format a diskette (I had missed a tutorial of the same the previous day) and from then on my heart had succumbed to affection. We were close, always walking each other after classes, playing solitaire and pinball together when a lecturer missed class. Ahhh, bonny and Clyde had nothing on us. Before I slept at night, I’d just think of her and whisper to my heart “I love you brenda” and let the theme song of “The promise”,( a popular Philippines soap opera back in the day) play inside my head reminiscing scenes when Angelo was thinking of innah. It was now three months of speculative friendship; It was time to “pop the feeling”. I took her for lunch, near the shores of Lake Victoria, Dunga beach. Mother Nature seemed to have set the mood already since a cool breeze swept the area. Given that I was being given 20 bob for lunch every day for (uji ya 10 bob + nyoyo ya 10 bob), I had been saving 10 bob everyday by just taking nyoyo plus water…just to make this moment happen. After clearing our lunch, still sipping our soda madiabas, amidst the cool breeze, I held brenda’s hand and told her that there was something I wanted to tell her. She looked at me back with the cutest of eyes, squeezed my hands, smiled and told me I could tell her anything. “I love you Brenda, I love you” I murmured. She smiled back, blushed and said “Tinda, I love you too…” Now the soap opera theme song again started playing on my mind as she talked. I was the man….well, I thot I was, till she concluded her sentence “…But as a friend”. I released a fart on hearing those words. I was hit, couldn’t offer a response..She started comforting me with lines like it’s better to have loved n lost blah blah, while still sipping MY SODA MADIABA. Three months of love shattered, Two months of savings engulfed in futility, Ego completely crumbled. And then they said a faint heart never won a fair lady...well a brave heart isn’t guaranteed victory too you “wahenga”. Some three days later, two of my friends came and told me “buana tumeona ule dem yako akishikana mkono na chali mwingine buana unachezwa”. I looked at them, and decided to just tell em the truth, after-all they were my very good friends. “nili-dump huyo dem kitaaaaaambo, ata juzi alinipeleka lunch pale dunga beach akijaribu tu-get back together nikakataa..sai anajaribu tu kunifilisha”. I told them
