Let me start by saying that this began with an innocent question in my mind where does the word Caucasian come from and what does it mean?. Im afraid that the social implications and baggage associated with racial issues made it difficult for me to even read this. I tried to set these aside and read this as a historical/scientific view on anthropology. I failed. What Im left with is that this term has been so abused, twisted and misused that is should simply be retired. The problem is so much of our social interaction IS based upon racial filters. Im not advocating that but its the observable reality. Think of the census. This is a key component. Job applications. School registration. This list goes on and on. We struggle with this because we must. We have to do the best we can to repair the wrongs of the past that haunt us to this day. But this is one we can fix easily. I will not refer to myself as Caucasian anymore. I know better now. Racial? European (yes, my ancestors invaded this continent and massacred its indigenous people). Social? American (despite the horrific behavior of my ancestors I was born here and it is now my home). But in my heart the one that matters far more than these? Human. Just like my brothers and sister all around the world no matter their race, social group, country of origin. The things that separate us are tiny in comparison to the things which bind us together. We are all humans living out our lives on this little blue planet in the midst of a very big, complex and dangerous universe. That should bind us more closely together and hopefully someday, when our childrens childrens childrens children walk this little blue globe it will. There will be no need for racial distinction because maybe, just maybe, by then we will all simply be human.
