Let me try are three words that make up the mantra for an organisation on Gautengs East Rand. Germiston on the East Rand counts an incredible 162 informal settlements within its borders. This inspired Nina Venjakob to start a skills development centre called Out of the Box (OTB). At OTB, people can learn to sew, knit, cook, make shoes and lampshades as well as repairing appliances and computers. There are classes in woodwork, screen printing, welding and basic computer skills. The courses are such that once they have acquired the required skills and competencies the students can become teachers themselves or open their own businesses - supporting their own families whilst creating employment for others. The centre also has a crèche, which is available to mothers attending training, and is currently looking at opportunities to open a library. Altron Power recently donated R100 000 towards the centre. In doing so, it also gave other group companies the opportunity to support OTB, for example, Aberdare donates scrap wire and old pallets. The project also creates opportunities for ongoing involvement in enterprise development and skills development initiatives.
