Let s analyze what holds for Sri Lanka in the future (being at a consensus) Title: Compromise or risk it all Reasons: - May be after 10 years a weak government in Colombo would mean history repeating itself; increased demand by TNA for Vadukkodi resolution (At least Land and police powers). - Dissolution of power must happen on a uniform basis over all the provinces. (There are 9 provinces in Sri Lanka atm but the concentration of nationalities and ancient heritage demands only two or three Say North, South and East) - To avoid anymore chaos and move forward; There are 2 main ways a) and b) a). Sri Lankan government should compromise on the definition of provinces and land and police powers. then divide the country into 3 main provinces with land and police powers allocated to each. b). TNA should compromise on the land and police powers and accept the present form of dissolution of power. Which is the viable solution? I firmly believe b) is the viable solution given the following reasons; 1. Empowering with land and police powers based on the concentration of nationalities would be detrimental to the nationalities living interchangeably within provinces. 2). Allocation of land and police powers to all 9 provinces is detrimental in every respect to the unity in South. So the next option of dividing it between 3 provinces can become a national issue due to the requirement to change the long estd definition of provinces. 3). Problem for minorities would grow further because there can be new born minorities such as Sinhalese in North, Muslims in North and May be even Sinhalese in East. Probably Half million hill country tamils demand another province ! 4. Increases the risk of regional harmony considering the geographic proximity of Tamilnadu and Jaffna both states empowered with police powers; A stronger call for a separate state. Considering all these; my call is option b) but coupled with few more impressive deals. a). Sinhala Tamil and English all three being made Languages of the state. ( and thus root out the unwanted problem created at an unwanted time) b). Introduce flags for each community religion and hoist all 4 flags at every national event. c) Ensure a transparent system by which the lowest in the society irrespective of its nationality can aspire as much as the highest.
