Let thy Johns come! But for the exigency of time, I would have written this piece yesterday being the commemoration of Saint John the Baptist’s beheading – a man whom Jesus says “is the greatest.” Fortunately, the Catholic Church has feasts to commemorate and perpetuate heroic acts of faith with carefully selected prayers to match the mood of these events. The beheading of John is one of such. We know the story. He was beheaded apparently because of his stands on matters which directly affected his society- “a voice cries in the wilderness. Make your paths straight….” As an unrepentant crusader for truth, he openly reprimanded King Herod for marrying his brother’s wife- an action that triggered his ordeal! It will be difficult to find a prophet like him especially in our country which is in dire need of good men. We are as guilty as our prophets. The dream of an average person is to break into the elite class not to add value to society but to ensure self preservation and survival. Almost everyone has chosen convenience rather than eating wild honey and locust as John did. That hard-work pays is overstating the obvious. How our activities affects our ecological space is the wild honey and locust John ate. The struggle to build a society founded on truth, freedom and justice was his food. To him, that was convenience and hard-work. It is common nowadays to betray for a pot of porridge! Actions are motivated by the need to survive rather than the quest to serve humanity and please God. We are all Johns in need of transformational baptism. As we remember him, let us enlist in the crusade to build an egalitarian society we can truly call ours. Let thy Johns come oh Lord!
