Let us for once agree with hagiographers (or praise-singers, if you like) that the enterprise they have successfully elevated to a profession is indeed now the most profitable profession in the world. So, let us say “President Goodluck Jonathan is the most educated and the best leader since our independence in 1960”, that “Dame Patience Jonathan is the best First Lady we have had since our independence in 1960”, that “General I.B. Babangida is the most patriotic leader (dead or living) that we have had since our independence in 1960”, that “General Abdulsalami Abubakar is the best midwife of democracy in world history”, that “there has never been and there will never be a Senate President as great as Senator David Mark”, that “the best governor in our country at the moment is no other than Alhaji Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State”, that “there will not be Kwara State today without the Sarakis”, that “Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State is Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy rolled into one in terms of wisdom and oratory”, that “Governor Chibuike Amaechi is the only authentic revolutionary of our time”, that “aspiring governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, is the man that will take Ekiti State to the promise land” and that “it will be forever impossible for any governor to beat Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State to the ‘All time Platinum Peace Award’”. But we have to ask ourselves if, as we say all these today, we will be able to say them again in say, 50, 60, 70 years time in the manner we say of Alexander Graham Bell, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Oduduwa, Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo and Nelson Mandela today. Therefore, let not the professional hagiographers of today become the professional mudslingers of tomorrow. They MUST uphold their HALLOWED profession. Or must they not?
