Let us hypothesize a person who has ongoing plans to commit - TopicsExpress

Let us hypothesize a person who has ongoing plans to commit suicide, such as Hesses Steppenwolf, not in any immediate way but with an inevitable sense of fatalism. Say that this person has found talk therapy to be a waste of time, and that taking pills such as Prozac leads to a sense of detachment which is actually more conducive to self-destructive behavior. Posit that this person has an internal dialogue with a spiritual or imaginal guide or godhead, but finds on the one hand that the internal dialogue is inevitably divorced from material circumstances, and on the other hand that immersion into this spirit world is preferable to engaging the material world, thus leading to further schisms. When such a person encounters messages of hope from an external source, encouraging people such as themselves to get help, or even that things will get better, because Ive been there and survived, it can lead to the mistaken impression that confessing ones plans will not in fact lead to institutionalization, ostracism, or even incarceration. I can only advise such people to be careful who you trust. Suicide has NOT been normalized. By the same token, Id advise any would-be do-gooders not to take on more than they can handle. Dealing with suicidal people is not something everyone can do. However, if you do take it on, be advised that some may just want their own right-to-die confirmed, or are just looking for someone sufficiently sensitive and passive to trap in an abusive dynamic.
