Let us leave the life of great Madiba into the Hand of God and - TopicsExpress

Let us leave the life of great Madiba into the Hand of God and stop scampering about for every biographical account of the man. Why do we need to celebrate his life (“We must celebrate him” The Times June 26, 2013)? Did not David and later on Jesus shout “Into thine hand I commit my spirit...”? (Psalm 31:5). They both trusted God more than anything else in this God-forsaken world! They had put their trust into the Hand of God. We have now hero-worshipped the man to a level, we have raised him to a deity! Reluctant though we are to recognise it, we find the established religious organisations which profess the name of Jesus Christ teaching the diametric opposite of His teachings—condemning the customs He practiced—following, instead, the pagan customs He condemned! “Let the elders decide...” decide what? Nearing death at the age of 120-years but with his eyesight and physical strength unimpaired, Moses implored God to relent and allow him to enter Canaan. But the leader who had so often interceded to save his people could not successfully press his own case. The Lord was adamant: “...speak no more unto me of this matter” (Deuteronomy 3:26-27). Before Moses enjoyed his tantalising glimpse of Canaan, he delivered three long exhortations to the Israelites, recalling the four decades of their travails and triumphs in the desert since leaving Egypt and repeating the basic tenets of the Law handed down to them on Mount Sinai. With God beside him, Moses at last ascended the peak of mount Nebo which is in a mountain range in Moab across Jordan. He scanned the sweeping panorama of earthly gift that awaited his long-suffering people. His siblings, Miriam and Aaron having preceded him in death, Israel’s great lawgiver died and was buried by the Lord in a hidden grave somewhere in a valley of Moab. God kept the location secret so that the Israelite’s would not make the religious error of turning the site into a shrine of worship. The epitaph for Moses, his accomplishments and the Jewish summations appear at the very end of the Pentateuch: “And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, In all the signs and the wonders, which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt...”(Deuteronomy 34:10-11).
