Letitia Maria Martis “Today this scripture has been fulfilled” - TopicsExpress

Letitia Maria Martis “Today this scripture has been fulfilled” (Lk 4:21) She was small and delicately built woman. She come for advice and prayer after her abusive husband and beaten her yet again. As we stood in the balcony together, each wrapped in silent thought, these words of scripture came to my mind: ‘A bruised reed he will not break, and dimly burning wick he will not quench’(Isa 42:3). I sensed that the Lord was asking me to reach out to her with his compassion and to strengthen her with his consoling promise. Jesus describes his mission in today’s Gospel using the scriptural imagery of humble service, not with words of might and power that were expected of the coming Messiah. He was not sent to expel the Romans, establish a new Davidic, reign, or restore the ancient glory of Jerusalem. That is why the Jews would not accept him but even attempted to kill him. To accept Christ fully we need to receive him on his own terms. We must allow him to do what he wants to do for us rather than dictate the when, how and why of our expectations to him. The challenge before us is to recognize that we are the same blind persons, the captives and the downtrodden that the father sent him to liberate. FRUIT: Have I tried to create an image of Jesus not based on what scripture says but on my selfish needs?
