Lets Talk today about: How Essential Oils Work - 1 Essential oils are multi-taskers in that they can perform many different functions. They are composed of tiny molecules, all less than 500 atomic mass units in molecular weight as opposed to fatty oils that weigh 1000 or more amu. Why is that important you ask...because of their infinitesimal sizes, any essential oil molecule placed anywhere on the body is trans-dermal and can reach EVERY part of your body within minutes. Yes every part, they even cross the blood-brain barrier. Some people can put an oil such as peppermint or cinnamon on their feet and taste it on their tongue in less than a minute. Essential oils in plants serve many functions such as regulating plant growth (like hormones), they help in plant metabolism (like enzymes), they also provide the basis for the plants immune system warding off undesirable viruses, bacteria, microbes, fungi, parasites and insects. When the plant is cut, it bleeds oleo-gum-resin into the wound which initiates healing. Because God created the plants for us (Gen 1:11-12, 28), their oils can serve many of the same purposes for us as they do in plants. y can support our endrocrine, circulatory, digestive, nervous and reproductive systems. They can clear our sinuses, metabolize our nutrients, minerals, and vitamins. They can also boost the natural defenses of our immune systems so we can fight off diseases ourselves. While they are friendly to us, they are hostile to invaders like bacteria, viruses , parasites and fungi. Since ancient times oils have been used as insect repellents (cedarwood, myrrh, citronella). Citronella was used as an insect repellent in Biblical times. Mint can be mixed with water and sprayed on roses to control aphids. Just as the bleeding resin helps to heal the plant by filing the wound and initiating the healing process, pouring essential oils into cuts and wounds can accelerate healing and protect from infection because of their antiseptic capabilities. Most essential oils are microbes microbicides to some extent. The most gentle Biblical oils are aloes (sandwood), balm, bay, bdellium, coriander, cedarwood, cumin, cypress, frankincense, galbanum, henna, juniper, myrrh, onycha, rue, shittim (acacia) and spikenard. The stronger anticeptic Biblical oils include anise, calamus, cassia, cinnamon, dill, fir, hyssop, mint, mustard seed, pine, terebinth and wormwood.
