Lets face it, this is normally how it works in Brighton and Hove.… Greedy developer who has no cultural conscience for the city purchases a building and either : A: Mysteriously burns down, B: Removes a supporting wall so it falls down or C: Comes up with an idea that (that they know in reality) might commercially fail in a few years. But hey... it’s got it through council planning nice and quick without the public really being informed properly of whats being lost here. They say the changes are reversible, but in reality do they have a condition of planning to pull down any news building that are built on backstage access routes. If this shortsighted development fails, whats happens next. New luxury flats, retail or office space ? Lets be honest how may times have we seen this happen in Brighton. Developers are interested in one thing and one thing only.. making loads of money. The council are being shortsighted with one of the last remaining listed buildings in the town ( we are a town as we don’t have a cultural city mentality) This whole deal has been rushed though the back door without any real consultation or thought. With some VISION this amazing Theatre could be made commercially viable and a major asset to the City.
