Lets keep SAFETY in mind... What can carriers do to protect their drivers safe? Drivers are already under enormous pressure to make scheduled shipments on time. With safe, easily accessible truck parking areas filling up early, they can lose a lot of valuable drive time hunting for a safe place to rest — if they’re lucky enough to find one. So, when it comes to staying safe, being proactive is the name of the game. And, that’s where fleet managers and dispatchers can play a critical role. What can you do? Keep the availability of truck parking facilities top-of-mind when mapping routes for your drivers. Ensure everyone is on the same page regarding the receiver’s hours of operation. Inquire if your drivers can park on shippers’ or consignees’ secured property after hours, should they not be able to load or unload when the truck arrives. Don’t allow your drivers to get turned away at a gate without the available drive time they need to reach a safe alternative. Work proactively for your drivers — while they’re focused on the road, use technology to keep tabs on their available on-duty hours and locations, diverting them to safe parking when unexpected circumstances arise. Truck driving is still considered one of our nation’s deadliest occupations. Even when at rest, drivers can’t be assured of their safety. It’s up to all of us to provide the support they need to get home to their families safely.-XRS Corp.
