Lets make a habit of blessing our restaurant meals. When Im having a meal I first make the sign of the cross, bow my head, and say a brief prayer in my mind. But I feel awkward doing this in public, like in a restaurant. It isnt commonly done any more, and attracts glances. It is tempting to skip it. I want to encourage Christians to do this. Lets be visible in the world. Even if you dont make the sign of the cross in your tradition, dont be embarrassed to bow your head and pray. It sure does encourage me when I see other people doing this. This is not a bad time in history to quietly show the world that Christians are prayerful people, and we are everywhere. *Please* dont do this only to show off or be aggressive. Fake prayer is insulting to the Lord. Its a form of taking the Lords name in vain. But if you can really pray in thanks for the food youre given, then lets encourage each other to overcome embarrassment and pray. I once met a couple who got married because she bowed her head to pray in a hotel restaurant. She was alone on a business trip, and saw him looking at her, and thought that when she prayed before the meal he would eave her alone. Instead he thought, Thats exactly the type of woman I want to marry.
