The panels, set up by a national monitoring committee for education of SC/STs and persons with disabilities, have suggested that private higher study institutions must implement quotas of 15 per cent for SCs, 7.5 per cent for STs and 27 per cent for OBCs. H. Chaturvedi, the director of Birla Institute of Management and Technology, a private institution, argued against reservation in private institutions. “Private institutions do not take any assistance from the government. They should not be forced to implement reservation. It should be left to them to decide what affirmative actions they would take,” Chaturvedi said.
