Lets put the cost of modern Canadian air travel into perspective, - TopicsExpress

Lets put the cost of modern Canadian air travel into perspective, shall we? Were currently holding a seat sale, and Ill sample a fare, lets say YYC-YYZ, on sale for $271.03 one way, taxes included. This flight is 2,696 kilometres. Of that fare, my airline, WestJet, receives $198.00 (also known as the base fare). This covers the cost of fuel, crew pay, airline operations, etc. All other taxes and fees go to the airport authorities, to provide you with proper infrastructure, NAV Canada to ensure you are safe in the sky, and the federal government to protect you from terrorists. While were at it, lets also throw in a checked bag fee for fun ($25). You have paid 11 cents per kilometre...and you have paid that cost to travel that distance in a matter of HOURS. Your alternative is a higher fare on the bus or train, and a trip 12X as long...the value in air travel.
