Lets see how the religious right enjoys being hoisted on its own - TopicsExpress

Lets see how the religious right enjoys being hoisted on its own petard. The law of the land states that legally, the government has to provide a level playing field for all religions. This goes back to the establishment clause in the 1st Amendment. Giving favoritism to a religion could, and would, be construed as an establishment of religion by the government, which it can not allow according to this clause. This in turn has resulted in a kind of all or nothing policy. So either we allow no religion in a place, or all must be allowed. As a result, when you start allowing religious exemptions to a thing, you must allow other religious beliefs their time in the sun as well. I know of no time, at least in recent history, when people in this country try to pass a law or policy that allows their religion to do something, that some other religion that they dont like, hasnt tried to use the same rule for their benefit as well. Much to the chagrin of those who created the original rule in the first place. One classic example comes to mind. A few years ago a state in the south, I believe it was Mississippi, created a law that allowed state funding to go to religious schools. They thought it was terrific and great. Yay money to Jesus schools! Only, then a Muslim school began the process to receive funds for their religious based school. The people that passed the law were angry and upset because a non-Christian school was trying to get money using this law. I believe one exacerbated law maker was quoted as saying, and this wont be exact mind you, We only meant for Christian schools to get money. Thus, when I see things like this article, I look at it, I smile, I chuckle, do a little dance in my mind, and then metaphorically laugh my ass off as I watch them squirm in their own stupidity. The Germans have a word for that, its schadenfreude. Man, they must have a word for everything.
