Lets set aside the fact that Eric Garner was legally murdered and consider the laws that led to him being legally murdered. Selling loose cigarettes on the street is CLASSIC American entrepreneurship. You buy something in bulk, break it out, and sell smaller quantities at a markup. In fact, its about the only form of entrepreneurship that is available to the poor, because it doesnt require venture capital. Better yet, its not begging and its not mugging. Its microbusiness, just like the ones in the Third World to which us guilty white liberals send donations. I would MUCH rather that people like Eric Garner sell loose cigarettes (which is against the law) than beg from me (which is protected by their First Amendment right to free speech). Most of the smallest-scale entrepreneurship -- the kind that would be the most useful to the poor -- is illegal in America. If we REALLY want people to be able to lift themselves up by their bootstraps, we need to re-think this.
