Lets take a look at a bit of history on the 30th anniversary of The Accord. Yes it is in the past but it has structured the world we now live in. The vying for position in the ALP by union leaders was perfectly understandable and acceptable in the early days, when the ALP was the political instrument of the workers and while ALP and workers interests were one and the same. Anyone who says that is now the case is giving voice to the great mendacity of current Australian so called representative democracy - or they are blind. And that is not to say Bill Shorten doesnt have it in him, I believe he does. And now the picture is not so straightforward. Complicated by the absolute necessity of addressing the depletion of resources and the environmental emergency we face. Whether we like it or not, the interests of workers are not always aligned with the interests of maintaining the environment and long term functional survival. And then there is global distribution. No matter closed or open borders, the idea that we can presently isolate ourselves from the growing poverty, often imposed by US and Australian military action, and from the shallowness of our global fresh water supply, is ludicrous. Do we sit and watch them die? Workers of the world unite. Even if we heartlessly choose that road out of self interest, does anyone really believe that they will die without forcibly incorporating Australia? The US will save us the neoliberals shout. Like hell they will. They leave 40% of their own population at near or below the poverty line. They maintain full trade protection in our bi-lateral trade agreement whilst we maintain none. They cast themselves outside jurisdiction of the UN or any other major world tribunal, they call universal health care the work of the devil, and they exercise martial law over their own population. Does anyone really think they give a damn about this country beyond what it can afford them in the future for their own? The Accord was a major sell out of the Australian people. It operated in the interests of global free market capitalism to stifle the voice of any who might effectively oppose their agenda. This article, written by a South African observer, is a history lesson. The TPP is the next and much greater pup to be sold. Read this. When youre done, bother to discover the TPP, then do not buy. Change.
