Lets take a moment to remember the legendary Gene Colan (September 1, 1926 – June 23, 2011), one of the finest artists the comics art form has ever known. Hes best known for his Marvel work on titles as diverse as Daredevil, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange, and, of course, Howard the Duck and Tomb of Dracula. Think how different each of those are from one another and then also consider Colans outstanding work in the genres of war, romance, horror, western, and detective. There wasnt anything he couldnt draw and what he drew was breathtaking. I only worked with Gene a few times and, every time, I found myself losing myself in his expressive pencils. You didnt so much script Colan pages as enter them. Gene is also responsible for my efforts to remember the birthdays of the comics creators whose work means so much to me. When the Internet was yet to be born, I tried to send out birthday cards to artists I had worked with. When Gene received one, he sent me a thank you note. He was truly moved by the card. It was, he said, the first time hed received a card from a comics industry person. When I realized how much it meant to him, and with the ease of the Internet, I decided it was well worth my time to remember comics greats on their birthdays. So every one whose day is brightened by this small gesture can thank Gene for it. Thanks for all the great comics, sir, and for how good you made my stories look.
