Lets talk about Poo..... Now, I know that this is not a very nice topic of conversation but your Poo can be a great window to seeing if your insides are working well! What colour is your poo? COLOUR Brown is good (well, okay, not good, but it’s a sign that things aren’t as serious as they could be). Yellow, red and black are not. Let’s start with green though to ease you into things. Green. This colour stool is typical for foods that have passed through your system so quickly that it’s unable to be broken down. Don’t worry, this means things are okay and it’s likely a stomach bug or food poisoning that is sure to pass. Drink plenty of water and rest. Red and black are a bigger worry. Bright red means there’s fresh blood in your system, usually closer to the… end of the tube. Black either means there’s dried blood or internal bleeding somewhere closer to your stomach or small intestine. Consult your doctor immediately in either case. Be advised, foods such as beets, iron supplements and black liquorice can also cause this discolouration. Yellow and greasy is not another colour you want to see in that toilet bowl. That’s fat you’re pushing out, and not the type you want to slip off your hips. These excess fats can suggest a malabsorption disorder, potentially celiac disease, but you shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Stay calm. Consult your doctor for a professional opinion and proper diagnosis. Yellow stool can also be a sign of infection. White and chalky: also not the best look for your poo. Grey, chalky or white poo is a sign that your liver’s not at it’s best. Bile, which is made by your liver, is what colours your poo brown, so if yours is paling in comparison, there may be an obstruction in your bile duct. In other words, discuss with your GP. IDEAL Ultimately, what you should aim for in terms of general poo is Bristol Stool Chart perfection. In short, look into that bowl (brave it for the sake of your health!) when you’ve finished doing your business and if you see something resembling a brown banana, then you’re sitting pretty. Or standing pretty, at this point. Note: I am not medical professionals and do not claim to be.
