Lets talk pitching mechanics for a little bit. (One of my greatest loves). Ive attached a brief article done on ESPN last year that compares Greg Maddux (one of the best to ever play and who was almost never hurt) vs. Stephen Strasburg (talented but Oft injured- Tommy John Recon and multiple shoulder issues). Obviously there can be huge debate on correct mechanics, and in my opinion there are a few red flags in Strasburgs delivery. Lets start with the Inverted W- The basic jist here is that during cocking phase of the throwing arm, the shoulder is still internally rotated and the elbow is above the level of the shoulder. On one side, yes this does increase arm speed and action on the pitch, but on the downside it delays the arms action while the trunk rotates, leaving the pitching arm behind and thus pretty significantly increasing the stress on the anterior shoulder and medial elbow. Lets discuss. This is the first of what will be a few pitching mechanic discussions. Well also eventually get into the set-up, foot position and follow-through. espn.go/mlb/story/_/id/7726953/a-comparison-stephen-strasburg-greg-maddux-pitching-mechanics-espn-magazine
