Letter: Scientists have changed their tune on climate George W. Iliff Wednesday, February 19, 2014 George W. Iliff, Port St Lucie Letter: ‘Scientists’ have changed their tune on climate My recent letter referred to global warming as “nonsense.” Jerry Buechler’s Feb. 3 letter disagreed and noted that 97 percent of scientists support global warming. To respond, let me cite a little history. From around 1940 through the 1970s, the Earth cooled a bit, which prompted a fear of global cooling. Some excerpts of the news articles of the time were as follows: The Washington Post said, on Jan. 11, 1971, “Scientists See Ice Age In the Future That’s the long-long-range weather forecast being given out by ‘climatologists,’ the people who study very long-term world weather trends.” The Los Angeles Times said (Sept. 24, 1972) “Scientist Sees Chilling Signs of New Ice Age. A new Ice Age is creeping over the Northern Hemisphere, and the rest of this century will grow colder and colder, a British expert on climate has claimed.” Time Magazine (Nov. 13, 1972) said, “If the Earth’s recent history is any clue, says Marine Geologist Cesare Emiliani of the University of Miami, a new ice age could become a reality.” The Christian Science Monitor on Nov. 14, 1979, said “One of the questions that nags at climatologists asks when and how fast a new ice age might descend. A Belgian scientist suggests this could happen sooner and swifter than you might think.” Similar articles appeared in many other newspapers during the 1970s. So, how can you trust the “scientists,” who first tell you that it’s global cooling and then tell you later that it’s global warming? Incidentally, during that 1940-1980 period, the amount of carbon dioxide went up substantially and yet the Earth cooled. This destroys the global warming alarmists’ claim that higher CO2 levels cause global warming. Yes, CO2 is a minor greenhouse gas but its effect has been greatly exaggerated.tcpalm/news/2014/feb/19/letter-scientists-have-changed-their-tune-on/?print=1
