Letter sent to the Editor, Richmond Register: Madison County Tax Watch congratulates the Madison County Board of Education for holding the line on taxes. This is an indication of improved money management. Through the years John Lackey was instrumental in asking tough financial questions and Mary Renfro has done the same. Since Elmer Thomas took the reins from Tommy Floyd, there has been a stance of willingness to be engaged in conversations that address the MCTW/ taxpayers point of view. This is the second time in 3 years we have seen no tax increase from the Madison County school district. Prior to this, the BOE took the tax increase every year since 1990! Also, congratulations to David Gilliam, Assistant Superintendent in charge of instruction for the improvement in scores bringing our district above the state average. Even though Model is included in our district, their scores, as reported, have fallen. Please consider that in years past the Board consisted of a majority of EKU employees. This resulted in the sanctioning of exorbitant spending and hiking of taxes. This is no longer the case. Lets keep it this way. Since the district does business with EKU, it is a conflict of interest for those employed there to hold positions which would facilitate beneficial arrangements. Keep this in mind when your vote on November 4th! Dont vote based on which candidate has the biggest or prettiest sign. Now that citizens have attended meetings and spoken out with facts to back their arguments, the BOE has begun to consider that business can be done in a more sensible manner. We all benefit, and the childrens results are the proof. Respectfully, Debora Secchio
